Marriott STARS: Complete Guide (2026 Updated)

Marriott STARS gives you daily breakfast for two, a guaranteed $100 hotel credit and room upgrades at 328 hotels — plus the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Our complete 2026 guide, with real experience at Ritz-Carlton Bali and The Athénée Bangkok.

What Is Marriott STARS?

Marriott STARS is an invitation-only advisor program — Marriott extends STARS accreditation to a select number of top-producing agencies, and QX Travel holds it. Every booking made through us at a participating hotel carries the full STARS benefit package automatically, at the exact rate you'd pay booking direct. Unlike Bonvoy elite status, STARS isn't earned through nights or spend — it's tied entirely to how you book.

Every hotel within STARS's six brands participates automatically, and individual properties can't opt out, which isn't true of every preferred-partner program (Marriott Luminous, for comparison, is opt-in per hotel — see the comparison below).

Which Brands and Ships Participate?

  • The Ritz-Carlton
  • Ritz-Carlton Reserve
  • St. Regis
  • The Luxury Collection
  • Bulgari Hotels & Resorts
  • EDITION
  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection — Evrima, Ilma, and Luminara, Ritz-Carlton's three ships (more below)

Marriott STARS Benefits: What Do You Actually Get?

Breakfast for Two, Daily — Guaranteed

Full daily breakfast for two, at every STARS hotel, with no exceptions. This matters more than it sounds: The Ritz-Carlton and EDITION don't include complimentary breakfast for Bonvoy elite members at any tier, so for those two brands, STARS is the only way most guests get it at all.

US$100 Hotel Credit — Every Property, No Exceptions

This is one of the clearest differences from Marriott Luminous. STARS includes the $100 credit at every single participating hotel; Luminous only offers its credit at select properties. Usable across dining outlets, spa, and room service — I used mine at The Athénée Bangkok for lunch at their Thai restaurant.

Room Upgrade

One category upgrade, subject to availability at check-in. Two brand-specific notes worth knowing: Ritz-Carlton Reserve doesn't offer complimentary upgrades through Bonvoy status at all, but does through STARS — and Bulgari doesn't participate in the Bonvoy points and elite program in any capacity, making STARS the only structured way to get an upgrade, credit, or recognition there whatsoever.

Early Check-In & Late Check-Out — Often to 4pm

Priority requests for both, subject to availability. In our experience, STARS tends to secure a later check-out than Luminous does at comparable properties — often 4pm where the hotel can accommodate it.

Welcome Amenity

An arrival amenity that varies by property.

A Higher Level of Personalization

STARS bookings typically involve more direct coordination between your advisor and the hotel ahead of arrival than Luminous does — useful if you want a stay built around something specific (an anniversary, a particular room location, dining reservations arranged in advance).

Marriott STARS and Your Bonvoy Account: The Full Picture

This is worth stating plainly, because it's the most common misconception about preferred-partner programs: a Marriott STARS rate is an official Marriott rate, not a side arrangement. Your stay shows up in your Marriott Bonvoy account exactly like any other booking. You earn full Bonvoy points, Elite Qualifying Nights, and Elite Qualifying Spend — including toward Ambassador status. Bonvoy promotions that apply to standard rates, like extra elite night credits, apply here too.

The one thing that doesn't stack is breakfast: if your Bonvoy elite tier already includes a breakfast benefit at a given hotel, you don't get it twice — STARS breakfast and Bonvoy breakfast aren't additive, you simply get breakfast once, for two, either way.

The London EDITION

Marriott STARS vs. Marriott Luminous: What's the Difference?

Since these two get searched together constantly, here's the direct comparison. Luminous covers Marriott's premium brands — JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, W Hotels, Westin, Marriott Hotels, Renaissance, Sheraton and others — and its $100 credit is only available at select participating hotels. STARS covers Marriott's luxury tier — Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, Bulgari, EDITION — and includes the credit at every hotel, with no exceptions.

Beyond the brand split, STARS generally comes with a higher level of personalization in coordinating your stay, and tends to deliver a better late check-out (often 4pm, where Luminous properties may not extend as far). If your hotel is in one of the six STARS brands, book STARS. If it's one of Luminous's premium brands, use our Marriott Luminous guideinstead.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: STARS at Sea

STARS benefits also extend to Ritz-Carlton's own cruise line — a detail most guides to this program miss entirely. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection operates three ships: Evrima (149 suites), Ilma (224 suites, debuted 2024), and Luminara(226 suites, sailing Alaska itineraries in 2026 alongside its usual routes). Summer 2026 brings 44 voyages across more than 20 countries and 90 ports aboard Evrima and Ilma, with Luminara running the line's first-ever Alaska season.

Is Marriott STARS Worth It?

Yes, without much of a caveat. There's no cost difference versus booking direct, the $100 credit is guaranteed at every hotel (unlike Luminous), and two of the six brands — Ritz-Carlton and EDITION for breakfast, Bulgari for everything — offer little or nothing to Bonvoy elites otherwise. If your stay is at any STARS brand, there's essentially no reason not to book this way.

The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong

My Experience With Marriott STARS

I've stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Bali and The Athénée, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok through STARS, with the Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort next on the list.

At The Ritz-Carlton Bali, the upgrade came through to the next room category, along with a welcome amenity, full complimentary breakfast, and the hotel credit usable across the dining outlets and room service. At The Athénée Bangkok, the upgrade and daily breakfast were both there, and I put the hotel credit toward lunch at their Thai restaurant along with the welcome amenity — a genuinely good use of a benefit most guides just describe generically as "dining credit."

Marriott STARS Hotels We Recommend

  • Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve (Ubud, Bali) — visited, though we haven't stayed here yet; it's on the list.
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok — opened December 2024 inside One Bangkok, with views over Lumpini Park.
  • Lake Como EDITION — opened March 2026 in a restored 19th-century palazzo on Cadenabbia's shore; one of EDITION's newest and most talked-about openings.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection — for anyone who wants STARS benefits at sea rather than on land.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Marriott STARS? An invitation-only advisor program covering Marriott's luxury brands — The Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, Bulgari, and EDITION, plus the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection — that adds daily breakfast for two, a guaranteed $100 hotel credit, a room upgrade, and priority late check-out at no extra cost when you book through an accredited advisor like QX Travel.

Does Marriott STARS earn Bonvoy points and elite nights? Yes, in full. A STARS rate is an official Marriott rate — it earns Bonvoy points, Elite Qualifying Nights, and Elite Qualifying Spend (including toward Ambassador status) exactly like any other booking, and current Bonvoy promotions apply. The only benefit that doesn't stack is breakfast, if your elite tier already includes it at that hotel.

What's the difference between Marriott STARS and Marriott Luminous? STARS covers Marriott's luxury tier (Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, Bulgari, EDITION) and always includes the $100 credit. Luminous covers Marriott's premium tier (JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, W Hotels, Westin, and others) and only includes the credit at select hotels.

Does Marriott STARS work at Bulgari hotels? Yes — and it's the only structured way to get any preferred-partner-style benefits at Bulgari, since Bulgari doesn't participate in the Marriott Bonvoy points and elite program at all.

Does Marriott STARS include the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection? Yes. STARS benefits extend to all three ships — Evrima, Ilma, and Luminara.

Can I book Marriott STARS online? Yes — unlike some preferred-partner programs, STARS can be booked directly through QX Travel's website, both by program overview and by individual hotel.

How many hotels participate in Marriott STARS? 328 hotels as of 2026, across all six STARS brands, plus the three Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ships.
